Valentine's Traditions

My new VALENTINE DOOR DECOR - COURTESY of my MOM!
Thank you for my VALENTINE MOM!!! Isn't it CUTE??

Happy Valentine's Day! Can I say, this was my first year that I ever MUTTERED THE WORDS - - - I HATE VALENTINE'S DAY!! I have the attitude that it is another holiday for the comercial industry to sell us STUFF we don't even NEED!! Yes, that is how I feel about it . . . especially hunting for Valentine presents! Blah!

But, then . . . I remembered how fun it was as a child! Yes, there is a VALENTINE tradition in our family and for that matter . . . in our hometown of Grantsville, Utah!! When I was growing up. . . you didn't just walk up to your Valentine and hand over your gift! No, no, no . . . that is just way to PLAIN and NONE EXCITING!!! Instead, valentine's were delivered in the good old KNOCK and RUN or PIXIE KNOCKING method!! DOES ANYONE ELSE DELIVER THEIR VALENTINE'S in this MANNER???

Really, when you think about it, this does make delivering your VALENTINE a LOT MORE EXCITING!!! Especially when you live with your valentine or Valentines!! As a child, we gave valentines to siblings, parents, cousins, and friends! We waited till night fall, then with our homemade gifts in hand we quietly went to their houses . . . you had to be quite stealthy . . . you carefully and silently placed your valentine on their doorstep, rang the door bell, and RAN FOR YOUR LIFE to your predetermined hiding spot!! You Valentine would come to the door and then ATTEMPT and with any LUCK FAIL to find you!! It was quite exciting!

But, the REAL EXCITEMENT was delivering VALENTINES to your parents and siblings! Why? Well, you first had to get YOURSELF OUT OF THE HOUSE with GIFTS without anyone DETECTING YOU EXITING!! That was usually a well thought out strategy!! Then, you had to determine the quickest way back into the house without them catching you and where to hide till you could get yourself back inside!! Truly, this was the measure of how STEALTH LIKE YOU WERE - a good valentiner could easily pull it off . . . a not so skilled would be caught running around the house to back door . . . .

When we moved, at the beginning of my H.S. years, I was really rather saddened to discover the delivery of Valentine's in this manner did not extend beyond our little town of Grantsville, Utah. However, our family kept the KNOCK and RUN method alive!! And, every year, when my significant other approaches me with his gifts, he get the same lecture, "WHAT? YOU AREN"T GOING TO SNEAK THEM OUT, leave them on the DOOR STEP, and try to get back in without me CATCHING YOU?" I know, I should just take the gift and call it good . . . but, there is something about just handing over a Valentine that feels CHEAP to me!! I feel like I have been RIPPED OFF!! So, the tradition will CONTINUE on to my daughter . . . who currently is asking when someone is going to ring the door bell and leave a Valentine!! YES, she had LOTS OF PRACTICE at GRAMMY'S this morning!! It is so much MORE FUN!

IN TRUTH . . . the KNOCK and RUN method is a lot like CUPID's STRATEGY!!! He doesn't just walk up to you, say "I am gonna make you fall in love with THIS PERSON at this TIME!" NO, our little friend SNEAKS UP ON YOU and HITs YOU IN THE BUNS when you LEAST EXPECT it with one of those TOXIC LOVE ARROWS he carries . . . . it is very secretive and you NEVER CATCH HIM!!!

I am VERY GRATEFUL for our SILLY TRADITION of PIXIE KNOCKING with our VALENTINES . . . it just adds some EXCITEMENT to the holiday . . . when will they strike and will I catch them?? Not to mention the planning of your own strike!!

Does anyone else deliver their Valentine's in this FUN manner of Knocking and RUNNING, or do you have a SILLY Tradition all your own?? Please share!! Well, I am off to plot my Valentine delivery as soon as NIGHT FALLS!! Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Nah, we never have done such fun stuff! You're lucky. At our home now, we barely celebrate with a candy treat... this year is the exception. Travis hates the day for commercial reasons and for that reason we've downplayed it in the past. This year he surprised me and it put me in such a good mood that I splurged and got the kids and Trav a little more of a valentine. Sooooo, count yourself lucky to get a gift from your hubby and be glad you have a daugther who'll reciprocate some day! ;D

I had no idea that the "knock and run" method was a Grantsville tradition. I, of course, have past it onto my girls, because like you, I think this is the only way it should be done. Valentine's is a little different around our house since our little Kelsey was born on that day (9 years ago, AGHHHH). Anyways, congrats on keeping the tradition alive!!!! Yeah for Grantsville!

I have never heard of this "Knock & Run".... that sounds like a blast! All we ever did was make Valentine boxes, take them to school and hope to secretly from the boy you had a crush on....

That's awesome you kept the tradition in your family.

Dude, you have the best memories of the mission. My mind has turned to mush. I can't remember these details like you. I don't remember you peeing behind a outhouse.... where was this?
